Design experiences that focus on: - Autonomy (a sensation of personal choice) - Competence (a feeling of growth and mastery) - Connection (a feeling of emotional resonance) and you have designed something that students want to engage with, requiring 0 coercion.

If you have followed me for a bit, you know I'm a sucker for the idea of a Modern Golden Age (MGA). I believe Humanity can undergo such a transformation that we experience levels of abundance and progress unheard of. But first, we need to drop the "Golden Age". Here's why:

A Modern Golden Age is a verb, not a noun. It demands the awareness that we're living it and the practice of what allows us to maintain it. If we're able to cultivate that awareness, we surpass previous Golden Ages.

For us to build something, we must have agency over it. To root our definition in something that presents "the good" being delivered by an outside, mythical source, while, at the same time, looking at the past with the sole purpose of going back to it, makes no sense.
Aug 26
0010β€”

The point of a Modern Golden Age is hope for the future, through the building of a better future, NOT through a nostalgic sense of going back. Forward is the way! This is what I explore in Volume II of the Modern Golden Age Diaries.
Aug 26
0010β€”

Ada, a phenomenal writer and historian, argues that Golden Ages are actually a myth, a "legitimacy" tool. Only by ignoring the suffering of a given set of people can we claim that a certain period of time was a Golden Age. I agree! We need to rethink our definition of it! https://t.co/PLkqs1SSAU
Aug 26
0010β€”
500
Not just because of everything Ada argues about, but also because the original definition of it promotes this idea of "paradise-as-passivity". The "abundance" is given by something that sits outside of those benefiting from it. This is not compatible with building an MGA.
Aug 26
0010β€”
500
The original definition of a Golden Age comes from Hesiod (it's the first written version of it), and it describes the world as a paradise and people living like Gods. This is, for better or worse, our original definition of a Golden Age. https://t.co/xqT9aN0FNa
Aug 26
0010β€”
500
If, on the one hand, Hesiod is a key figure in our definition, Petrarch is the second one, since he coined the term "Dark Ages", a rhetorical companion to our definition of our Golden Age. He's also a key figure in @Ada_Palmer's book "Inventing the Renaissance". https://t.co/IjEklGZLXu

The final reason has to do with Shared Assembly Lines. The flexibility these platforms allow is much more limited than most people would expect. You can make a few adjustments, but the overall structure remains similar, which is why the design has felt so stagnant. https://t.co/z003yP51yD
Aug 24
0010β€”
500
A 2nd reason has to do with regulations for pedestrian safety. There's a series of different design specifications, especially in Europe, that aim at distributing force and diminishing injuries upon collision. https://t.co/8OgEEzxGhF
Aug 24
0010β€”

We now have much more computing power, which means we can simulate the conditions multiple times and get much more precise measurements without spending energy on an actual physical tunnel. The level of detail on evaluated parameters and outputs is ridiculously high. https://t.co/6AFxVHiDed
Aug 24
0010β€”
500
It turns out, physics doesn't care about design, branding, or intuition. With such extreme precision, most companies get much more similar results. It is not about artistic expression, but about mathematics. We're "calculating" new designs, and the result is similar.
Aug 24
0010β€”

All vehicles are tested in wind tunnels, a technology we've had for years. Submitting a car to these tests, however, is really expensive, so over the years, car manufacturers could rely on intuition. But that has changed. https://t.co/oki3bGnMph
Aug 24
0010β€”

There are 3 main reasons why this happens: - Increase in computing power in Aerodynamics Tests - Safety Measurements increased by Customer Preference - Shared Assembly Platforms
Aug 24
0010β€”
500
All cars are evaluated based on their aerodynamics. This happens now much more than years ago due to the many regulations on emissions and fuel consumption. The more aerodynamic the car is, the less fuel it consumes. https://t.co/YSPIlm5j0A
Aug 24
0010β€”
500
If you look at cars from years ago, many had distinctive designs, even among mid-tier models. But now, that's not the case; there's a huge convergence and similarities between models and brands. https://t.co/EGHlWfzhce
Aug 24
0010β€”
500
Me and my gf have been talking about it for the past few weeks: how new cars all look the same. Finally, we decided to see if this was just a personal opinion or not, and it turns out this is a whole phenomenon called Design Convergence, which led us both down a rabbit hole. 🧡 https://t.co/hkYFwBFQba

I've also been working on dealing with the most obnoxious type of assholes (which usually don't tend to have a big effect on me): EXTREMELY hypocritical Catholics [vicious people who need to leave early because they have to go to mass kind of people]
Aug 18

500
Unfortunately, my small village has a tendency to draw a lot of these during the last 2 weeks of August. You know the meme "if you think you're enlightened, go spend a week with your family? Mine is more like "if you think you're enlightened, go to the beach during August"

I spent this last week thinking about team dynamics and how power positions play on that. How biases can deeply influence you and your way of leading, and how that can impact the people around you (especially those who aren't benefiting from said bias)
Aug 18
0010β€”
500
I've also been thinking about organizational growth and how two conflicting forces keep pulling in opposite directions whenever that happens, and how the people on each side influence more than the actual goals/action of those same sides. this can be both good and bad.

Through the use of this money, Athens acquired overwhelming naval superiority when compared to its own allies. It was no longer Athens AND the allies. It was Athens, funded by the allies. This would quickstart the new power of the Athenian Empire.
Aug 13

There were 2 ways that the states could contribute to the League: - money - ships Most members sent money to Athens instead of supplying ships, which was how "the Athenian fleet expanded from the money that they contributed" while their own forces atrophied. https://t.co/1hQkb5tpSV

Athens was invited to lead by its allies, and every member had an equal vote when the League met in Delos. They swore oaths of loyalty "for all time," and there was no formal safeguard because there was no need for guarantees at the outset. It was Athens AND the allies. https://t.co/YjnnCB6QIh

I see your point, and there's an element of truth to it, but pedagogy and andragogy are different! Teaching adults is a very different thing than teaching kids. It's not that the activity itself doesn't make sense; it does! But the framing of it in an adult context would make most of them disengage. This is valid for a lot of exercises that, from a pedagogical standpoint, would help adults develop new skills, but because they demand the self-awareness of the adult, "faking a task," you lose the emotional commitment and willingness to engage. This is why board games are great ways to make adults learn in a playful manner. A lot of people are willing to play board games in a learning context, even as adults. The way you debrief and reframe whatever experience you just gave them creates the actual understanding.

Everyone is mad at George RR Martin, but at least we have a (shitty) ending in a TV Show. Those of us who enjoyed The Kingkiller Chronicles and Patrick Rothfuss' world will be left to die without knowing Kvothe's story. https://t.co/94GKwdA45P https://t.co/KXRIvTbMxF

No. I think autonomy is really hard to define in an education context because it's highly dependent on individual students. But the opportunity to make whatever choice they see fit in a given learning experience is close to the definition. Even more important is the students' awareness of that choice, which contribute to the idea (and feeling) of autonomy, creating an emotional ressonance that then gets the student to want to engage with the experience.
