It's crazy to me how many organizations just start their business without defining a mission statement or values, and then wonder why things aren't getting done as efficiently as they could be. Over the years, I've been increasingly leading visioning exercises for several organizations I've been involved. Then, define the principles we want to operate by. 3. It's always interesting doing this because when you start asking people about mission statement and values, operational details always bubble up to the surface. I think it's because people are usually so ensconced in their part of the work that they find it hard to zoom out and think high level. There's somewhat noisy signal here because people (me, for instance) use block as a synonym for mute. I don't think we have billions in AI safety funding. I think it's maybe a billion. What would be cooler, though, is a trillion. Considering we're protecting against the potential Black Swan with the most powerful technology ever created. It's also amazing watching the values take shape, because during the brainstorming session you can see people describe words or concepts and, without fail, even people with very different perspectives will always map back to the same core values. Been thinking about this recently. Directed a friend's donation towards a small project, and when that project announced the donation, it spurred on other people to donate, and suddenly they realized they had a much bigger scope than they thought they did. They are now publicly reporting on that bigger scope and encouraging people to start their own projects. It started with a mere hundreds of dollars.
