I would prefer if this academic justice movement was an organized campaign of savvy and effective coordinated goals designed to make our institutions great, good, and fair. I wish a banner was being raised for this that everyone could get behind, ala FIRE or the early ACLU. I would hope such a campaign would first build offices and contacts with every single academic board so it could apply pressure, conduct interviews, share early reporting before it goes public, and investigate fraud across the board rather than haphazardly. It might also meet, interview, and take comment directly with professors it finds to be frauds. If that professor is going to be under fire, then this organization may have resources or advice for that professor, for their family, and for their institution to help them handle the destruction of their career. A kind of wartime courtesy could be invented. And if the academy still allows fraud, then such an organized campaign would place blame and apply media pressure heavily on the administration, on the school, on the president/head, and on the board. Of course, the professor should get blame for their own fraud, but the goal of such a campaign is to discredit MANY of those professors and get them out of the academy, and to show that the academy itself is at fault for knowingly abetting this fraud the whole time, and even profiting off of it. Anyway, I don't have all the answers, but I think there should be some associations or organizations which spearhead academic integrity conversations, and whom people begin to trust as authoritative and just agents who want what is best for everyone involves, as long as the integrity of the academy comes first. fwiw, i do not get the impression that "ai is safe" from your account at all. I get impressions like: 1) AI safety is filled with a lot of nonsense and hype, when we ought to have at least defense-level science and engineering practices. 2) Those outside "the labs" often have better security practices than those in "the labs", so we should not cede the authority to regulate and protect us to those companies. 3) "the labs" are better thought of as silicon valley startups, rather than defense and science laboratories (like Bell Labs or DARPA, say) 4) It is an indicator of lack-of-seriousness that so many people in AI Safety seem SO surprised and scared by the Hugging Face incident. ("this may be the last warning we will ever get"). In fact, the Hugging Face incident is a within the range of predictable/understandable outcomes if you have worked with agent swarms before, and is especially predictable when you remove safety classifiers and guardrails. 5) If we want security, we cannot trust AI safety experts, nor the big AI startups, to deliver that security.
