over the last few years i’ve been building a relationship with each emotion, anger, sadness, helplessness, excitement, fear, joy but god damn, nothing’s kicked my ass as much as shame has. the motherfucker is elusive, pervasive, subtle, nebulous and works differently to other emotions. the shame i’m talking about in particular is the type of shame that gets imbued with the identity. it’s not like the blushing shame of tripping in front of a crowd of people, it’s the shame that’s sewn into the fabric of the being. it doesn’t easily make itself known, but like the background hum of an old fridge or the air con, it gnaws away at the being. it acts as a blanket that covers grief, rage, fear etc so you don’t feel them, but instead leaves you with a thousand paper cuts. it’s the pinnacle of self fulfilling prophecies; it desperately wants you to belong, yet it compels you to withdraw, to second guess yourself, to hide. it is the byproduct of disconnection and it produces disconnection. shame, like all the rest, wants love.

i love how every time i experience a dating dynamic (eg asymmetrical attraction), i then subsequently end up in another dynamic where the roles are reversed and i get to experience what the other person must have felt like. it’s so eye opening.

finally getting around to writing a substack post about how to move/process emotions when you're triggered. this process has been super empowering for me and has really improved my relationships. I'd love any questions, common challenges etc so I can address them as I write! https://t.co/uwZMJagIuU

fear is activated but is not registered or acknowledged -> restlessness/worry/concern -> dissatisfaction -> seek activities or people that would sooth or numb it or catch the impulse -> notice the fear in the body -> hear it out -> let the fear take over for a second -> rush of energy up the body -> relief/smile/safety

@RogerThisdell ok but most people i know who went very far with this had an initial (somewhat accidental) opening that gave them insane motivation and work ethic to keep going. i think most of the half assessed attempts are done by people who didn’t have that.

every 3 months or so i go through a new obstacle in my coaching practice that leads me down a rabbit hole of exploration until i process it and level up as a practitioner. this most recent one led me to track aliveness in sessions as an important signal. if i notice a drop in aliveness, i think about what needs to happen, then deploy that intervention and it usually unlocks something and ends up being helpful for the client. every time i go through one of these cycles (even if it’s sometimes painful in the moment), i end up feeling even more invigorated by and invested in this work than before.

@reconfigurthing same. the other day I wrote a post in one day but didn't post it that night, then reviewed it the next day and actually made some very important improvements and I don't imagine I would have done that if I had to publish another post the next day.

@nosilverv for sure! ai writing usually lacks the resonance (in the gendlin focusing sense of the word) that good human writing has. it feels amputated somehow. though that doesn't seem to matter to those 4k users.

ofc there’s a survivorship bias thing where you tend to remember the things that do happen but regardless, it’s a very helpful practice because it clarifies what you want in more fine grain detail and it also absolves you of the illusion that it’s all resting on your shoulders.

@QiaochuYuan hmm as I think about this I wonder though why we want respect for example, in my opinion if we feel respected it means we are liked and admired by the group which feels like it might be pointing to a similar need as wanting love?

great question. short answer: by noticing its side effects. long answer: unlike many other emotions that could be identified in a localised way (eg: fear in the belly), this type of shame is very hard to identify in the body in a discrete way, so instead i’ve been noticing the “signs”. the distinct, repeatable thoughts I’ll have, the accompanying doubt, the actions i take, the mood i’ll find myself in etc

what happens if you say out loud all the things that feel true in that moment, like it might sound something like: - i know im sad but idk how to cry and that makes me feel so… - i have this idea that i would heal if i cried but idk how - why the fuck can i not cry arghh - im scared that if i cry… - im scared that if i cried i would… - i dont want to fucking cry but also i do wanna cry but also i feel like if i did.. - if i sobbed right now… - i just wanna push myself to cry because… and so on ideally standing up, being expressive as you say it and importantly saying it out loud rather than inside your head.

@JamesTamplin i’m still in the process… but usually shame is sitting on top of other emotions so when you get to that layer you can then feel them to “~completion” as you say.
